This privacy notice contains information on how the British Council will handle the personal information that you have provided within the registration process for Study UK events.

British Council complies with data protection law in the UK and laws in other countries, such as the General Data Protection Regulation, that meet internationally accepted standards.

WHY WE NEED YOUR INFORMATION & OUR LAWFUL BASIS

The personal information requested will enable you to sign up for and access both the webinars and individual meetings available during the Study UK virtual event. It will also enable us to send you communications related with your participation in this event. This information is necessary for us to offer the requested service, as per our terms and conditions of registration.

Your personal data will also enable the British Council and participating universities to better understand the audiences who engage digitally with our work and to contact you for feedback about this event. We will do this based on our legitimate interest to improve our services in the future.

We may also use your personal information to contact you about future similar British Council events or products that may be of interest to you, only if you have given your consent to receiving marketing information.

HOW LONG WE KEEP YOUR DATA FOR

We will keep the personal information you provide in connection with the activities directly related to the Study UK events for a period of six months. We will apply the same retention period to the information from our surveys and market research that will help us improve our services.

We review our marketing lists periodically and may keep your contact details in connection to our marketing activities for a maximum period of seven years You may stop receiving these communications at any time by following the unsubscribe link available in every communication.

WHO WE SHARE YOUR INFORMATION WITH

The British Council will not sell or disclose your details to any third parties for commercial purposes; we will only share your information with our third-party service providers and partners for purposes directly related with this event. Our service providers are:

  • Scholarum, our provider for the Study UK virtual event. Scholarum use two approved subcontractors: BigMarker, to facilitate the webinars and one-to-one meetings with UK Universities;
  • Campaign Monitor, our provider for electronic communications.

Where you have signed up to specific webinars or meetings, we will also share your information with our partners:

  • The UK Universities taking part in this virtual event. The list of participating educational institutions is available here
  • IELTS, to inform participants about IELTS courses or exams

Where you have shown an interest in receiving marketing details, we will also share your contact information with all our partners as listed above.

INTERNATIONAL TRANSFERS

Our main supplier Scholarum is based in the European Economic Area (Spain); they use subcontractors (BigMarker) based outside of the EEA with the appropriate contractual safeguards.

YOUR DATA PROTECTION RIGHTS

You have a number of rights in relation to how we process your personal data, for example, the right to ask for a copy of the information we hold on you, or the right to ask us to correct any inaccuracies in that information. You can do so by writing to us at IGDisclosures@britishcouncil.org.
